A 200-year-old pigeon tower
Pigeon towers were once among the most common types of building in Iran, housing pigeons and usually built in a round shape. These towers were built to collect bird droppings for use as fertilizer on farms, or in certain industries such as leather.
Today only a few remain, and they are popular with tourists. The Meybod Pigeon Tower is another popular one, dating back to the Qajar dynasty and located southeast of the old town of Meybod in Yazd Province.
This round building was once home to four thousand pigeons and also has outstanding architecture. The front of the building is decorated with smooth plaster around the round structure to stop snakes from slithering in to eat the pigeons. Each nesting niche is built 20 x 20 centimeters, and the building is also designed to protect against predators such as hawks and owls.
It is another marvel, relying on clever design that benefits both pigeons and people...
