Iran's Royal Super Gems: Diamonds, Rubies, Emeralds, Pearls and Spinels by the Thousands of Carats

TL;DR — Iran has a museum under the Central Bank of Iran that displays the country's priceless treasures, handed down from the era of the monarchs.
💎 Iran has a museum under the Central Bank of Iran that displays the country's priceless treasures, a source of national pride, handed down from the era of the monarchs.
💎 That place is the "National Jewels Treasury," located in Tehran. It displays a great many gems and is known as one of the most famous collections of diamonds and gemstones in the world.
💎 The gems displayed here were first mentioned by foreign travelers in the Safavid era (1501-1736), which means they may have existed even earlier but simply went unmentioned. Shahs from the Safavid era onward collected gems from many places, especially India and the Ottoman Empire, and in the 1930s they were even used as the reserve funds of Persia at the time.
💎 After the Iranian Revolution there were worries that the new government might steal these gems or sell them off. It is believed this did not happen because the Iranian authorities still needed them as currency reserves. The current website says it wants to show "the silent tears of the oppressed who worked hard, while the rulers used gold and gems to display their arrogance and power," and to "learn from history the fate of those who seek power and hoard wealth" (in other words, propaganda against the Shah's regime).
💎 The Treasury has been open to visitors in its present form since 1992. The gems in this collection are so unique that they have never been appraised by experts. Which gems stand out? Click through to read the caption of each picture.
