TL;DR — Many people are confused by the flags of Tunisia and Turkey, which look alike: a red rectangle with a crescent in the middle.

Quite a few people are confused by the flags of "Tunisia" 🇹🇳 and "Turkey" 🇹🇷 because they look alike: a red rectangular flag with a crescent in the middle. The difference is that Tunisia's flag has a red crescent and star inside a white circle, while Turkey has a white crescent and star placed toward the hoist side.

But why do the flags of these two countries look so similar? Today The Wild Chronicles will tell you.

Originally, Tunisia was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans had long used the crescent, meaning Islam and good luck, on various flags, but they still had no official national flag. One flag stood out, though: the naval ensign, which looked just like Turkey's flag today.

Later, in 1827, Al-Husayn II ibn Mahmud, ruler of the Beylik of Tunis, which was already independent of the Ottomans, decided to design a flag for Tunisia. It was inspired by the Ottoman naval ensign, to convey Tunisia's past as part of the Ottoman Empire, and it was made the national flag in 1831.

As for Turkey, which carried out the Tanzimat reforms in 1839 to adapt to the West, it declared its own naval ensign the national flag in 1844.

In summary, Tunisia was originally under the power of the Ottoman Empire, so the influence of the Ottoman naval ensign, an unofficial symbol of Turkey, became the inspiration for Tunisia to adapt into its national flag, while Turkey itself later adopted its own naval ensign as its national flag after its reforms.
