About this tour
The oldest religion in the world, and in Thailand, is spirit religion: the belief that spirits live in places, objects and animals. This one-day outing by The Wild Chronicles looks at the spirits that still sit quietly behind everyday Thai life.
The day begins with a lecture on the history, beliefs and legends of spirit religion, regarded as the root of the Tai peoples. It then visits Wat Mahabut, tied to the legend of Mae Nak Phra Khanong; the Giant Swing and Brahmin shrine, to trace spirits in royal court tradition; Wat Takhian, with its coffin-passing ritual and an optional ceremony of lying in a coffin; the Ganesha shrine at Bang Yai; and the cemetery at Wat Prasat, said to be the most haunted in Thailand and guarded by a spirit named Usawadi. Sacred objects along the way include a 1,000-year-old Takhian tree and Luang Pho Yim.
The program runs from 08:00 to 18:00, meeting at McDonald's in Lotus's On Nut and starting and ending near On Nut BTS station. It is led by Phongsorn Phumwat, a writer who studies spirit religion and owner of The Wild Chronicles page.
