About this tour
Thousand Layers of Tunisia is a 10-day, 7-night history tour of a strategic North African country where Berbers, Carthaginians, Romans, Ottomans and Arab-Muslim dynasties each left a layer of heritage. The route runs from Tunis and Carthage through Dougga, Kairouan, the Sahara oases around Tozeur and Douz, Matmata, El Jem and Sousse, and ends in Sidi Bou Said and the Medina of Tunis.
Highlights include the El Jem amphitheatre (used as a Gladiator film location), the Great Mosque of Kairouan, Roman Sbeitla, the Chebika and Mides oases, a camel ride in the Sahara, a night in a cave-style Berber hotel and a visit to the Sidi Driss hotel used in Star Wars. Six sites on the route are UNESCO World Heritage listed.
Two departures were offered in 2024, 8 - 17 November led by lecturer Chain Senngam (over 30 years in history tours) and 4 - 13 December led by lecturer Krittapas Samatthai (Ajarn Pom, 9 years leading history tours).
