Spain-France-Andorra: Why Go to "Unexpected Europe" with The Wild Chronicles

When Europe is mentioned, many people think of historic powers such as France, Spain or Germany. But there are two lands that, though they have no state of their own, have a distinct culture, language and long history: "Occitania" and Catalonia.

Both lands use a branch of the Romance languages called "Occitano-Romance". In the Middle Ages they were centers of art and literature, yet they were overshadowed and forgotten in mainstream history.

***Occitania: Land of medieval poets and courtly love literature***

"Occitania" (or "Occitanie") is a land in southern France with its own language, Occitan, which is close to Catalan and very different from French. In the past this made the area seem far from the center, with a cultural identity of its own.

In the Middle Ages this land was the center of a poetic culture, with the "Troubadours", poets who sang songs of love and praised the idea of "courtly love" (amour courtois): a lofty love between a knight and a noblewoman, full of loyalty, adoration of the beloved, and sacrifice. This idea has influenced romantic literature around the world up to the present.

This land was also home to "Catharism", a religious movement that flourished in the 12th-13th centuries. Its dualist belief saw the material world as evil, created by a dark god, while the spiritual world was pure and had to be escaped to. The Cathars therefore rejected the authority of a Church full of luxury and worldly power.

The Church viewed these beliefs as heresy, and in 1209 the Pope proclaimed the Albigensian Crusade to wipe out Catharism, in which Catholic armies fought the Occitan nobles and the Cathars.

The war was full of cruelty. Occitan cities were burned and destroyed, and the Cathar population was massacred. The war ended in 1229 when the Count of Toulouse surrendered. Occitania lost its independence and was annexed into France. From then on, Occitan culture and language were suppressed by France, and today Occitan is a disappearing language spoken by only a few hundred thousand people.

***Catalonia: Land of architecture, art and football***

Catalonia, in the northeast of Spain, with Barcelona as its capital, suffered a similar fate to Occitania. It has its own language, "Catalan", close to Occitan, and Catalonia was once mighty in the era of the Kingdom of Aragon.

In the 18th century Catalonia was fully absorbed into Spain, although there were several attempts to break away and gain independence.

Later, in the era of General Franco, the dictator tried hard to erase the Catalan identity, but the Catalan independence movement kept fighting and preserved its identity. After Franco's death in 1975 the Catalans gained self-government, but it was still not enough for their sense of identity, so an independence movement continues, and it has been heavily suppressed by the Spanish government.

Although neither "Occitania" nor "Catalonia" appears on the map as an independent country, they keep strong cultural identities in language, literature, art and politics, and have had an important influence on Europe. Even though state power has tried to swallow them up, these lands remain standing and keep fighting to maintain their identity.

We will take you to these lands full of history, culture, and a once-powerful past that was absorbed by nation-states, right here.
