About this tour
The Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous land empire in history, and in the 13th and 14th centuries it stretched from East Asia to Eastern Europe. This 7-day, 6-night trip covers the heritage that grew out of it: Kharkhorin (Karakorum) and its museum, Erdene Zuu Monastery, the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, and the Buddhist monasteries of Ulaanbaatar.
It also covers Mongolia's landscapes and nomadic life: the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes, Hustai National Park with its Przewalski's horses, Terelj National Park and Turtle Rock, a nomadic tourist camp, camel and horse riding, and nights in gers.
The tour is led by Ajarn Chen Sa-ngam (อ.เชนทร์ เสนงาม), who has more than 30 years of experience in overseas history tours. The sources list two departures in 2024, 15-21 June and 10-16 August. Thai passport holders can enter Mongolia for 30 days without a visa. The price excludes flights; a ticket on the recommended airline costs about 28,000 baht.

Day 2Ulaanbaatar – Kharkhorin
Drive about 6 hours 13 minutes to Kharkhorin (Karakorum), Genghis Khan's legendary capital, founded in 1220 in the Orkhon Valley on the Silk Road as a political, economic and religious centre, until the Ming army destroyed it in 1380.
- Karakorum Museum, with 13th-14th century artefacts, stone tools, pottery, coins, Buddha images, inscribed steles and a model of Karakorum as it was in 1250
- Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, built in 1585 from stone taken from the ruined city and ringed by a wall with 108 stupas
Day 3Elsen Tasarkhai – Hustai National Park
Drive about 1 hour to Elsen Tasarkhai, 'the separated sand', a small desert in the steppe that is part of the Mongol Els dunes, known locally as the 'singing dunes'. Visit a camel-herding family in their ger, walk the dunes and ride a Bactrian camel. You may see maral deer, wolves and foxes.
Then drive about 3 hours to Hustai National Park, home to more than 800 Przewalski's horses.
Day 4Nomadic camp – Genghis Khan Statue – Terelj
Drive about 43 minutes to a Mongol nomadic tourist camp for a performance that opens with Mongolian long song and the horsehead fiddle (morin khuur). Visitors can join archery, wrestling and horse-racing activities and see sheep and goat milking, wool shearing, felt-making, ger-building and traditional cooking.
Then see the Genghis Khan Statue Complex, built in 2008 for the 800th anniversary of the empire; the stainless-steel equestrian statue is the largest in the world. Continue to Terelj National Park for the night.
Day 5Terelj National Park – Turtle Rock – horse riding
Explore Terelj National Park, with its granite mountains, forests, grassland, wildflowers and rock formations shaped by wind and rain. See Turtle Rock, a boulder shaped like a giant tortoise and a highlight of the park, and go horse riding for about an hour with an expert giving basic instruction.
Day 6Nomadic family – Ulaanbaatar
Visit a local nomadic family and see rural life that has barely changed for centuries. Then explore Ulaanbaatar.
